New centre to help sex attack victims

A SPECIALIST centre designed to support victims of sex attacks is to be set up in Kent, thanks to a £30,000 Government grant.

The new Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), which is expected to open by September, will provide a 'one-stop' centre where victims can get help and advice.

Staff will help with medical support, as well as with physical and mental health issues which victims often face.

The £30,000 grant, awarded to Kent Police, will be used to set up a pilot project working with one of the county's health trusts.

Det Sgt Domenic Kilbride said: "In Kent we already have a good cover for victims of sexual assault and rape with nine vulnerable victim suites across the county. The centre will combine health skills with the skills of the police to complement the existing provision for adults by providing both health care and forensic services under the same roof."

Victims who visit the centre will also have the opportunity to take part in a forensic examination, which is vital in many sexual assault prosecutions, or can choose to provide information which could help any prosecution anonymously.

Home Office Minister Hazel Blears said: "Rape is a horrendous crime, which deeply affects the lives of victims and their families, and inspires fear in our communities.

"The Government is committed to support victims of sexual crime and the development of Sexual Assault Referral Centres is a vital part of this."
