The quieter, smoother and more efficient engine replaces the aging 1.7-litre unit that had been in service across the Vauxhall, Chevrolet and other General Motors brands for many years.
This is the second application for the new engine, following its debut in the much larger Zafira Tourer.
In standard 134bhp guise it powers the Meriva to 62mph in around nine seconds, with potential for 64mpg and a CO2 rating of 116g/km placing it in road tax band C; currently £30 per year to tax after the first year, which is free.
The engine is also compliant with Euro 6 emissions regulations with the help of a special additive liquid that helps to clean up harmful emissions; a technique used by most manufacturers at the present time. The tank needs occasional refills.
There are also some styling updates for the Meriva to mark its switchover to a newer, cleaner diesel. A new grille, chrome-effect accents around the front fog lights and newly-designed headlights mark the car out.
Its signature features remain, though, including its rear-hinged rear doors reminiscent of a Rolls Royce. Vauxhall says the system gives rear occupants a 20% larger aperture to clamber through, and it also makes fitting child seats considerably easier.
The Meriva comes with Vauxhall’s ‘Lifetime’ warranty, which is valid for the life of the car but for the first owner only, and with a 100,000-mile limit.
Pricing and full specifications will be announced at a later date.
