Kent's new police helicopter has helped nab burglary suspects, detect a cannabis factory and even looked in on the footy - all in its first month.

The force's new chopper has flown 25 hours over the county in its first month of operation.

Launched in April as a shared resource for Essex and Kent police forces, it was seen as an alternative to buying in the service.

The new crime-fighting tool has so far found burglary suspects in Halstead, near Sevenoaks, discovered stolen property in Ashford, and produced photographic evidence of a cannabis factory in Ashford.

It also helped in the arrest of three men at a Gillingham football match.

Michael Fuller, Kent’s Chief Constable, said: “These are excellent examples of how the aircraft can be used to either support officers or gather evidence to assist an investigation. This agreement is fantastic news for Kent Police and our public, as we can use the helicopter in many ways to reduce crime, nuisance and disorder.”

Ann Barnes, chairman of the Kent Police Authority, said: “I’m delighted the helicopter is already having a positive impact on policing within the county and getting results. This extra tool will play a significant role in the forthcoming years and will bring big benefits to taxpayers either side of the river.”

The Essex-based helicopter is available for up to 20 hours a day, seven days a week, across both areas.
