Ian Hendon insists he won’t be a "yes man" at Gillingham following his arrival as Andy Hessenthaler’s number two this week.
The 38-year-old, pictured, quit as manager of Dover Athletic after just 18 days at the helm on Tuesday to become assistant at Priestfield.
Hendon fills the void left by the departure of Mark Robson, who had initially been named as Hessenthaler’s assistant. He left the club citing "personal reasons" just three weeks after accepting the role.
"I’ve played with Andy and our outlook on football is very similar," said Hendon. "As players we both wanted to win, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be a marriage made in heaven.
"I’m not going there to agree with everything he says. He’s the manager and will always have the final say, but I’m going to give my opinion as well."
Hessenthaler added: "We want to make sure there are different opinions and the key is getting to the right decision in the end.
"Ian has great experience, he knows a lot of players and he is also a hard worker.
"You need people around you that you trust."
