It’s been another mixed week since my last column. First of all we got a good three points against Wycombe, who made it difficult for us as I thought they would.
Even though they released their manager from his duties, they showed what a lot of teams do in that situation, a no-fear ethic and a determined attitude to show they are good players.
It wasn’t a great game in terms of total football but both sides showed how much they wanted the win and I think that’s what swung the game our way in the end.
Even after getting tagged back to 2-2, we still knew we could win. We just kept going until the end and Jacko scored a tremendous goal to give us the win.
It was great for me as I returned to the side after a while, against my old club and got a win – so it was satisfying.
As I said earlier, Peter Taylor had left Wycombe on the Friday and on the same day, John Barnes was sacked by Tranmere.
It’s a shame that managers seem to have such a short time to work through difficult times. I think everyone in the game knows, that given time, managers seem to produce the goods – Ferguson, Gradi, Wenger etc.
Hopefully clubs will begin to learn this sooner rather than later because there are two big football names who are now missing from action on a Saturday.
I’m sure though that both will be fine, whichever direction they decide to go in.
The Wycombe win set up the Brighton game nicely and we again travelled with the belief that we could win the game – had a couple of our earlier chances gone in then maybe we would have.
Unfortunately, we were undone by two set-pieces, which we are frustrated about and will be working hard to prevent from happening again.
We went in 1-0 down at half-time and came out to have the better of the second half, when we were denied a blatant handball penalty claim at 1-0. That would have made a huge difference to the outcome.
It wasn’t to be and we have to pick ourselves for the challenge of a tough trip to MK Dons on Saturday.
It’s another chance to get our away form going, at a great stadium.
They have started the season well and will be full of confidence but if we go there and play like we know we can then they will be in for a tough game.
Finally, I’ve got to mention Jacko’s Canadian accent bobbing up in his Sky Sports interview.
Every time he is on the telly he seems to have flashbacks of 15 years ago and comes out with this weird Anglo\Canadian accent. You’re not fooling anyone Jacko – you’re from Croydon!
