DETECTIVES are investigating after someone placed an object across the track and caused the derailment of a locomotive and coach on a miniature railway line.
The incident happened on a stretch of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway at Greatstone, near Folkestone. Police say a wood and metal fence panel had been intentionally laid on the tracks.
The train was being used to conduct a survey of trees that may require to be cleared ahead of the holiday season and only the driver and a tree surgeon were on board.
A police spokeswoman said: "The incident happened as the train was approaching the Derville Road bridge in Greatstone at about 8.50am on Monday.
"The driver saw the obstruction across the line and braked, but was unable to stop in time and collided with it.
"This derailed the locomotive and caused considerable damage to the drive shaft and sump, estimated at £6,000."
The train stayed in an upright position and neither the driver nor the passenger was hurt.
Det Con Eddie Evans said: “This train is regularly used by school children and members of the public. Fortunately the locomotive did not overturn, and no one was injured.
"We are investigating the incident with the RHDR and it is important that anyone who has information contacts us. House-to-house enquiries have been conducted in the area."
The combined weight of the locomotive and coach is estimated to be eight tonnes.
