Kent County Council says it has drawn a line under its campaign to have the Invicta horse as a landmark scuplture in Ebbsfleet.

The council said it would not be pursuing its campaign to have the design modified following the announcement that Mark Wallinger’s standing horse is the winning design for what has been dubbed 'The Angel of The South'.

The news will disappoint dozens of people who contacted kentonline to tell us they wanted the famous Invicta horse instead.

But KCC deputy council leader Cllr Alex King said the council would not be carrying on with the campaign launched last year to persuade Mr Wallinger to amend his design to a prancing Invicta horse.

Cllr King said he was pleased the horse design had won: "We are not running with our Invicta campaign and we will not be fighting it.

"At least [the winning design] is a horse and we are not in the business of complaining about the outcome. We put up a good lobby but you cannot expect to win them all."

However, he dropped a hint that the council had not completely given up on the idea of an Invicta horse sculpture somewhere else in the county.

"Who knows? Some time in the future it may happen but probably not just now when we are in a recession and money is tight."
