Olympic torch a week away from Kent

The map above shows Kent's Olympic torch route

by Martin Jefferies

Kent is just a week away from welcoming the Olympic torch - and you can still get involved as a Torch Reporter.

The flame, which spends longer in the county than anywhere else in the UK, calls at Tunbridge Wells next Tuesday before returning to Kent the following day when it snakes through Ashford, Folkestone and Dover, where an evening celebration is taking place.

On Thursday, the torch makes its way from Deal and Sandwich to Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate, before heading west to Sturry, Canterbury, Faversham, Challock and Harrietsham. An evening event at Leeds Castle completes the 62nd day of the flame's journey around the UK.

On Friday, the torch leaves Maidstone before heading through Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester, Strood, Higham and Gravesend. It will visit Borough Green and Sevenoaks before continuing its journey to the Olympic Stadium in London, where it will arrive in time for the opening ceremony a week later.

The Olympic torch will spend four days in Kent

Six celebrities will be among more than 230 people to carry the torch through Kent - including Tracey Emin, retired Olympic javelin thrower Steve Backley and British tennis ace Elena Baltacha.

KentOnline will be tracking the progress of all the county's torchbearers with our unique, interactive map – and we are looking for readers to join our team of four torch reporters to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event.

You will help the KM Group's multimedia reporters and photographers relay the excitement of the day by sending us your pictures, videos and audio clips and tweeting short updates.Olympic Games header

To register your interest in becoming a torch reporter, email mjefferies@thekmgroup.co.uk and let us know where you will be watching the torch from and what you will be doing as it passes by.

There will be further opportunities to contribute to our coverage next week.

The interactive map forms part of KentOnline's extensive coverage of the build up to the Olympic Games, which includes interviews with our Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls.
