Nearly one in five drivers breathtested by police in a summer drink-drive crackdown was arrested.
And the number failing drug tests has rocketed.
Officers throughout Kent and Medway breathalysed 958 drivers and arrested 189 people for drink driving, as part the June campaign.
The joint campaign by Kent Police, Medway council and Kent Highway Services aimed to change drivers' habits and ram home the message that even one drink is too much.
Kent Police roads policing unit inspector Paul Sellwood said: "We have breathtested 53 more drivers this year, compared to the figures for June 2009.
"Out of those tested we have fewer positive results for drink-driving and fewer arrests.
"However, our field impairment tests to check for drug use has increased slightly."
He said the force had a zero tolerance for drink and drug driving.
Those prosecuted can expect a disqualification, criminal record, up to a £5,000 fine or a possible prison sentence.
