Opposition to wind farm plan

PARISH councillors at Dymchurch, near Hythe, are opposing plans for a wind farm on Romney Marsh.

They are against the proposal because of the environmental impact, amount of concrete needed, the impact on quality of life of nearby residents and the effect on wildlife and flood risk.

Chairman of Parish Council Cllr Tom Gibbs said: "These turbines will be approximately two and half times as tall as Nelson's Column and I think the overall appearance of Romney Marsh would change."

Councillors are not against finding alternative energy resources and suggested the turbines should be placed out at sea.

Cllr Gibbs suggested that a SWERF (Solid Waste and Energy Recycling Facility) could be built at Dungeness instead of another nuclear power station.

He said: "The technology is now available for clean burning of organic waste, there could be a single track road laid alongside the railway line to Dungeness so the villages would be unaffected.

"It would have to meet the requirements of English Nature because of the bird sanctuary, and it would be constantly monitored."

Cllr Gibbs told KM-fm's Katy Dartford more about his concerns...
