TWO little girls from a Kent village who were orphaned in a road accident in which their parents were killed are recovering in hospital.

Village postmaster Nishan Singh and his wife Perminder, from Rough Common, near Canterbury, died after their car crashed into a stationary lorry in a lay-by on the A14 near Cambridge at the weekend.

Their two daughters, Simran, aged five, and Kiran, 15 months, were badly injured but are said to be a "stable" condition at the Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Messages of sympathy and flowers have been left by villagers at the shop in Rough Common Road.

The tragedy occurred when the family's car crashed into the rear of a lorry on Friday night. Police have appealed for witnesses.

Nisham's brother, Gary Singh, said: "We have been overwhelmed by people's kind thoughts but it is very difficult to take in what has happened. Our focus now must be on the girls and hoping for their full recovery."
