Cody McDonald goes overhead on Saturday Picture: Barry Goodwin
A frustrating afternoon against Morecambe on Saturday was saved from something far worse by Cody McDonald's late equaliser. Our panel of Gills fans give their verdict on the 1-1 draw.
David Garth
(Gillingham)
"It was a bit of a frustrating afternoon. I thought Morecambe were pretty dour to be honest. From what I recall their only effort on target was the penalty. I thought at the time it was harsh but having watched it again I have to say it was a good spot by the referee.
"Our biggest problem is that our midfield does not have enough guile to unlock defences. We battered them in the second half but we were missing the final touch, the bit of finesse. Whether we go up or not, Hess will have to look to address that. I think that is why Whelpdale was what he wanted.
"The other results more or less went our way. With Shrewsbury and Bury winning it’s not quite over, but it’s going to be tough to make the top three. We’ll just have to do it the hard the way again and enjoy a day at Old Trafford."
Keith Pestell
(Gillingham)
"Cody McDonald saved us again! We looked like a different team to the one which beat Lincoln 4-0 last week. You would think it was a different team.
"The ball spent too long in the air and when we finally did get it down and pass it towards the end of the match we put Morecambe under pressure.
"Automatic promotion is now out, but we should be beating teams like Morecambe at home if we want to be in the play-offs."
Paul Blakeley
(Maidstone)
"An immensely frustrating match against Morecambe results in more dropped points and with them any chance of automatic promotion in my opinion.
"I think a lot of Gills fans were quite disappointed with the performance, but I wasn’t too downbeat with what we did. We actually created quite a few chances and were denied through a combination of good goalkeeping, committed defending and some poor finishing.
"Barcham (pictured) provides us the only real ‘pace’ outlet, and if he isn’t able to do that we lose a massive option, likewise Curtis is in central midfield so needs to be mobile – he barely moved vs Morecambe offering nothing defensively or attacking wise.
"I’d quite happily see Rooney come in for Weston against Barnet – he at least offers himself up for everything, is happy to have a shot and provides us with a bit of oomph we need. I’m still hopeful we’ll go up, but we’re certainly not making it easy for ourselves."
Alex Hallam-Howard
(Gillingham)
"That was definitely two points dropped for the Gills against a Morecambe side that we should be beating.
"To be honest, I think a top three finish is beyond us now, and we should focus on getting maximum points from the next three games, so that we don’t need a result at Chesterfield on the final day.
"I still believe we can get in the playoffs, but the boys really need to push themselves over the line now."
Richard Pepper
(Manston)
"After last week’s emphatic win at Lincoln even the pessimist in me was fooled into thinking that just maybe we could sneak in and do something this season. Sadly normal service was resumed with us unable yet again to break down a solid opposition.
"On another day we could have had three points, but for a superb display by their keeper, however we need to be winning despite this. The penalty award was correct although the yellow card was harsh as it was not an intentional handball.
"We are still shockingly poor when it comes to set pieces, with no creativity and most were wasted or given straight to the opposition. We do not look consistent enough to win via the play-offs this season. Lots of hard work to be done in the summer that’s for certain."

"I predicted 1-1 but unfortunately I didn’t have any money on it. We got a fortunate penalty - though when I watched it back it was definitely the correct decision - and after that it was pretty much backs to the wall. The keeper kept us in it with seven or eight good saves.
"Gillingham put us under a lot of pressure and if there had been another five minutes I’m not sure if we’d have held on. Gillingham put us under more pressure than most teams we’ve played. Bury were like that at the start but faded, Gillingham kept getting stronger.
"The home crowd were very intimidating, there was a good atmosphere which is often lacking in this division.
"Everything at Gillingham is set up to play in League 1 and the support is there, I think they have a good chance if they keep playing like that."
