In the last of our special reports on Kent's emergency services, we look at the work of the dedicated, brave and skilled volunteers at the county's nine lifeboat stations.

Last year, the RNLI's lifeboats rescued nearly 8,000 people - an average of 21 every day.

The charity's 4,800 crew members are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and are regularly whisked away from their families and their workplaces.

They respond at a moment's notice to any number of emergency calls, ranging from search and rescue missions, to swimmers in difficulty and grounded boats, to cliff-side dramas.

Today, we talk to volunteers at Margate and Ramsgate's busy lifeboat stations about their difficult and often dangerous work.
