Overloaded plug causes house blaze

Firefighters have warned that a house fire which started when a plug overloaded could have been worse.

The small blaze broke out at 12.30am on Tuesday in a house off Walderslade Woods Road, Chatham.

Residents called the emergency services and waited outside the property after smelling smoke.

Two pumps from Medway attended.

It is believed the fire started because a plug underneath the stairs of the house became overloaded.

The fire crews were able to put the blaze out quickly before it spread.

Once the fire had been extinguished, crews also installed a smoke alarm.

A Medway Fire Station spokesman said: "We would ask that members of the public are careful not to overload their plugs, install a smoke alarm and check it regularly."
