A metal rock band’s tour bus was among hundreds of vehicles inspected as part of a national road safety operation.

Thankfully for the members of Enter Shikari and their crew, inspectors from Kent Police, The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and HM Revenue & Customs gave their bus a clean bill of health, allowing them to start their latest European tour on time.

However, it did prove to be a busy few hours just off the A2 at Boughton for the inspectors. At least one vehicle was seized for carrying an overweight cargo and having a driver with an expired licence, while several other commercial vans and lorries were also found overweight.

Insp Paul Sellwood, from Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, explained regular cross agency checks were vital in ensuring road safety.

“We want to get dangerous vehicles off the road, those which are uninsured and untaxed,” he said. “We’ve got a power to seize, so we will.

“Ultimately, what we’re trying to do is reduce collisions and those which involve a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

“If we can take one off the road and maybe prevent one fatal collision, then we would have saved one life and that can only be to the benefit of the occupants of Kent.”
