Mark Jesse and Kyle Donaldson were sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court.

Two men who tried to rob a corner shop while armed with a knife and golf club have each been jailed for five years.

Mark Jesse was sentenced earlier this year for the raid on The Mace Newsagents in Palmerston Road, Chatham while Kyle Donaldson was punished at the end of last week.

Maidstone Crown Court heard how the pair terrified Dinesh Periyanna as he worked in the shop on August 7 last year.

A customer had just left when Jesse, 34, and Donaldson, 31, both wearing baseball hats, went up to the till. Donaldson was holding the golf club and Jesse pulled out a large knife and pointed it at Mr Periyanna's stomach.

Mr Periyanna managed to get away but was struck on the head with the club and repeatedly punched during a struggle.

The raid was captured on CCTV and police identified Jesse and Donaldson.

Jesse was later arrested at an address in Palmerston Road. When officers approached Donaldson in the town, he held his arms out and said: "OK, you have got me. What do you reckon I will get for this."

Donaldson, of Glencoe Road, Chatham, admitted attempted robbery of the Mace shop and possessing an offensive weapon.
