More areas of the Towns should be protected from cars parking on verges, a council meeting heard.

Medway Council's regeneration committee called on the Cabinet to extend the three experimental schemes to other parts of the borough.

It follows a report that could see the removal of barriers from grassed areas following a recent parking crackdown.

In Beechings Avenue, Twydall, the meeting heard, 132 people were fined for breaking new laws to keep cars off the grass.

After four months the problem appears to have gone away, the committee was told.

Similar schemes in Albatross Avenue and Parkfields, Rochester, have also stopped parking on the verges.

Councillors said the scheme should be extended, but not to hit drivers who had no alternative parking.

They urged the Cabinet to provide a budget to enable it to happen.
