Parking wardens accused of being illegal immigrants

Two parking wardens have been arrested on suspicion of entering the country illegally.

The Nigerian men were arrested by the UK Border Agency after officers visited Medway council’s offices at the Civic Centre, in Strood.

A spokesman for the agency said the arrests followed “information gathered through intelligence”.

One man has been released on bail while a second man remains in custody.

A Medway Council spokesman said: “These are agency staff not employed directly by Medway Council. The council is rigorous on the employment checks it carries.

“The council’s policy is to check agencies carry out the same checks as the council would as a direct employer.”

Labour’s Cllr Stephen Hubbard, for Strood North, said: “The council should have carried out a proper audit of the agency it was using, to ensure it was carrying out the law by ensuring employees are able to work in this country legally.

“I have no problem with the UK Border Agency taking the appropriate actions.”
