Passenger in death crash named

A MAN killed in a car crash in Gillingham on Monday has been named as 83-year-old widower Leonard Shipp.

Mr Shipp, a retired security officer, of Barnsole Road, Gillingham, died after a head-on collision at Hoath Way. He was a front seat passenger in a blue Vauxhall Cavalier which was in a crash with a BMW.

His next door neighbour, David Watts, 66, said: "Relatives came to the house that night and told us what had happened. It's terrible. My wife and I have been living here for 22 years and Mr Shipp lived next door all that time. He kept very much to himself."

The BMW driver, a 23-year-old man from Gillingham, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is now on police bail pending further inquiries.
