A woman was pulled from her crashed car by a brave passerby just moments before it burst into flames.

The smash happened in Peninsula Way, on the Hoo Peninsula, Medway, at about 11.30pm yesterday.

It was spotted by a passerby who bravely pulled the injured woman from the car just before a blaze took hold.

Firefighters from Strood spent about 45 minutes putting out the flames and giving first aid to the woman, who is thought to have suffered abdomen, chest and neck injuries, but which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road was closed by police while firefighters dealt with the incident and the woman’s car, a silver Volkswagen Golf, was destroyed by the blaze.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "The car had crashed into a road sign, but luckily a man had spotted it and stopped and managed to pull the woman out of the car before the flames took hold.

"We gave the woman some first aid before paramedics arrived and took her to hospital."
