Video: Paul Wood triumphs
in the UK's Strongest Man contest

Paul Wood from Whitstable beat off competition from 10 others to
take the title of the UK’s Strongest Man in the 105 kilos and under
category.

In a close-fought contest at Whitstable Rugby Football Club
ground at Chestfield on Sunday (August 1) he triumphed over the
field after just over four hours’ of gruelling tasks, which
included flipping over a car, throwing a heavy beer keg over a high
pole and a deadlift during which he raised a weight of 335kg from
the ground to his waist.

Mr Wood won the same competition last year and, to the cheers of
his many fans at the ground retained his title this year, with Ben
Kelsey second and James Robson third. All three received trophies
and prize money.

Competitors came from all over England, including Manchester,
Derby, Loughborough and Swindon, and one man took part representing
Wales. Guest referee was Terry Hollands who, at 6ft 7in and 28
stone, has often been seen on television in the world’s strongest
man competition and is ranked fifth in the world.

Organiser Andy Dilnot said: “We are very pleased with the way
the event ran as it went pretty smoothly and everyone seemed to
enjoy themselves. There was a great field of supporters watching so
that was good to see.”
