A 55-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a taxi on Monday lunchtime.

He was taken to hospital suffering from multiple, possibly life threatening injuries after the incident in Footscray Road, New Eltham, near the junction with Southwood Road, at around 12.20pm.

He was in a critical condition according to police.

Sgt Ken Smith, of the Metropolitan Police's collision investigation unit at Catford, urged witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.

He said: "I am appealing for anyone who may have seen anything of this collision. It is a residential road and also a busy thoroughfare for traffic to shops and services.

"Were you walking or driving through the area around lunchtime on Monday? Were you looking out of a window to the street? Did you see anything of this incident?"

Anyone with information should call 020 8285 1574.
