The Butcher’s Arms in Herne, one of the smallest freehold pubs in the country, has been chosen as the district’s Pub of the Year 2008 by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).
Judges praised the selection of real ales in the 15ft by 12ft pub as well as its diminutive originality not to mention the wit of its locals.
Gerry Keay , chairman of the district branch of Camra, said: “The quality of the ale in the Butcher’s Arms is matched by the lively banter which flourishes in this cosy bar. It is a truly unusual pub and a worthy winner of our branch Pub of the Year award.
“The landlord prides himself on stocking a range or excellent quality beer and he always listens to his customers to ensure he offers the ales they want.”
Martyn Hillier opened the Butcher’s Arms late in 2005. He so named the pub because for much of last century it was a butcher’s and inside features remain such as the original chopping table and meat hooks.
Mr Hillier said: “You do not get told when Camra come round, they just do a blind tasting and go away and have a chat. Apparently they were unanimous in their decision. It’s very pleasing.
“I serve three regular ales in the pub and another two or so that I rotate depending on business. I also do takeaways.”
Popular real ales sold at the Butcher’s Arms include Hophead from the Dark Star brewery, and Harvey’s Sussex Best Bitter. Customers can buy the ale to enjoy at home in measures ranging from three-and-a-half pints to whole pins of 37 pints.
The pub, which has standing room for no more than 25 drinkers, will now go forward to the judging for the East Kent Pub of the Year 2008.
The Butcher’s Arms is located on the corner of Herne Street and School Lane in the centre of Herne and is open from noon to 1.30pm and from 6pm to around 10.30pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Contact the landlord on 01227 371000.
