MEDWAY'S entertainment and leisure scene is set to be transformed with a line up of festivals, concerts and military tattoos. Exciting plans have been put forward to Medway Council to convert an historic building in Chatham Historic Dockyard into a multi-purpose complex.

The riverside Number 5 covered slip, which for centuries has been used to build seafaring vessels, could soon be hailed as one of the county's major tourist attractions. But before the scheme is given the go-ahead, attention will be drawn to the impact on residents and the building's significant historical setting.

After the naval dockyard closed in 1984, the slip has been used for a variety of temporary services with repairs and refurbishment funded by English Heritage. Plans include music and drama concerts, theatre and opera, exhibitions, shows and garden festivals, vintage and veteran vehicle rallies, tattoos, auctions, flower festivals, antique, flea markets and fairs.

The matter will be discussed at a meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) night.
