PART of the Newington estate at Ramsgate is to be knocked down to give the area a fresh start.
The area has suffered with a high level of anti-social behavior and criminal damage, with many properties left empty.
Now the plan is to redevelop the housing and shopping facilities, including gardens and play areas, around The Centre, allowing more homes to be designed to accommodate people with a disability.
Ward councillor Richard Nicholson said: "This is a fabulous chance to breathe new life into an area that is worn, tired and tatty in places. The move is welcomed by the majority of residents who are fed up with troublemakers and drug dealers using the estate and making their lives a misery."
Cllr Nicholson said that the consultation process is well under way. It is hoped that work will begin next year and will be completed within 18 months.
Cllr Zita Wiltshire, council cabinet member for housing, said: "It is vital that everyone is involved in the plans for this major redevelopment, as this will have an impact on everyone who lives in the area."
