THOUSANDS of motorists can avoid the headache of a vehicle breakdown this winter by planning ahead, says motoring assistance provider Green Flag.
Breakdowns soar in the winter months - the volume of calls last December was 46 per cent higher than in June - but, according to spokesperson Nigel Charlesworth, many of these calls could be avoided: “By checking vital elements in the car’s mechanics and taking on board some simple maintenance tips, we can give ourselves the best chance to enjoy safe and troublefree motoring this winter.”
He said there were lots of low-cost measures drivers could do to keep their car on the road.
Green Flag sets out its cold weather tips:
1. At your service
A pre-winter service that covers all the main items that fail and cause vehicles to breakdown is essential. Most garages will include a check on all tyres (including the spare).
2. Avoid the battery blues
Flat or faulty batteries are the most common cause of winter breakdowns. Check the connections and charge the battery regularly. Consider replacing to avoid being caught unawares.
3. Keep your fluids up
Continue to make weekly checks on your brake, engine oil and water levels.
4. See and be seen
Visibility is the key when driving in winter conditions. Clean headlamps and indicators to be seen and show others you are there.
5. Brake in time
On average, brake pads last around 12,000 miles. Have them replaced before this distance and feel confident when you need to stop suddenly.
