RAM-RAIDERS smashed two 4x4 vehicles into a supermarket in Kent today in a bid to snatch a cash machine.

They struck at the Co-op store in Pattens Lane, Chatham, shortly before 3am on Thursday but failed to grab any cash and fled.

Police, alerted by a 999 call from a witness, chased one of the cars but had to give up after the vehicle went off road and escaped across fields in the Boxley area of Maidstone.

It was found nearby with the help of a police helicopter called in from Surrey. The other vehicle was later found dumped near Maidstone's Mote Park.

Officers investigating the raid quickly cordoned off the area, with scenes of crime officers called in to carry out a fingertip search.

A spokesman for Medway Police said: “No suspects have been located at this time, but anyone who may have witnessed this crime or has information about it should contact police.”

A Co-op spokesman said: “The store was closed at the time and no staff were present. Extensive damage has been caused to the store frontage.

“CCTV footage has been given to the police. The store is closed and it is not known when it will re-open. We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience.”
