Police in an unmarked car started pulling over drivers after getting fed up with being tailgated.

Officers patrolling Kent's motorways stopped several of drivers, many in HGVs, for careless driving after the incidents.

They also caught motorists hogging lanes and even one driver who tried to force their unmarked vehicle out of the way.

The Kent Police Roads Policing Unit (RPU) tweeted about the numerous encounters throughout their weekend-long crackdown on April 13 and 14.

As usual the posts were cut with the contemptful sense of humour followers have come to expect, ridiculing the careless drivers they came across.

"Whilst patrolling the contra-flow M20 coast bound in lane one, at the 50mph speed limit this vehicle decided that he wanted to check what was in my boot so drove very close behind me for a mile," they tweeted. "Funny enough he pulled back a bit when the blue lights came on."

"Third HGV of the day stopped for careless driving after being seen to tailgate three separate vehicles," they added later on in the day.

On Sunday, officer tweeted twice saying: "Just to prove it's not all HGVs, this car was stopped and the driver reported for lane hogging, also in the M20, and "Just to show it's not all foreign HGV drivers (not my words) this local driver was reported for careless driving after trying to force out unmarked vehicle out of the way in the M26."

The RPU tweet multiple times each day with instances of motoring offences ranging from mobile phone use to undone seatbelts.

The force recorded a total of 11,239 vehicle offences between December 2017 and February 2019.
