Police have revealed that there is "no evidence" that a baby injured in Gravesend was sexually assaulted.

The baby, a month old at the time, suffered serious injuries in an incident in Gravesend on December 1 last year.

National newspapers reported the baby had suffered injuries consistent with a sexual assault.

But a Kent Police spokeswoman said: "At this stage of the inquiry, police can confirm that medical professionals have determined there is no evidence of the baby being sexually assaulted."

Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the baby boy's other injuries.

He spent several weeks in King's College Hospital in London after he was admitted in a critical condition.

He was released a few weeks ago. He is currently staying with foster parents.

Two people arrested in connection with the assault on the baby remain on police bail.

Chief Superintendent Neil Jerome, said that the baby's grandparents were intending to return to their Gravesend home, which was boarded up after the incident.

He added that they have never been implicated in any way in the investigation.

He said: "This is a very emotive case and the investigation is ongoing.

"The grandparents of the baby are intending to return to their home in Gravesend.

"Kent Police urge the local community to respect their privacy.

"I would like to stress that the baby's grandparents are not and have never been implicated in this investigation.

"The two people currently on bail pending inquiries, will not be returning to the area at this time."

People left candles, teddy bears, and held vigils for the baby outside a Gravesend house during December.
