Police outline how the
bomb hoax investigation is going
by Martin Jefferies
Police investigating a double bomb hoax in Canterbury exactly a
week ago say they have had "a number of useful calls", as they
renew an appeal for information.
Detectives are still trying to find out who planted hoax devices
in the baby changing room in Marks and Spencer and by the railway
line in Old Dover Road.
Parts of the city were closed off while police and bomb disposal
experts investigated the packages.
Officers will revisit the scene of the security scare in
Whitefriars this afternoon, when they will ask shoppers whether
they noticed anything suspicious last Friday.
Det Ch Supt Chris Hogben from Kent Police said: "I'm really
grateful to the public for the calls we've had so far, but I still
believe there are people out there with information that could be
crucial to our investigation team.
"I think it's dangerous to focus solely on the incidents in
Marks and Spencer and on the railway line.
"The person or people responsible for this may have been moving
around Canterbury and it may be that someone saw something
suspicious elsewhere in the city. I'd urge anyone with information
to contact us."
Officers are currently wading through hours of CCTV
footage and a stack of forensic evidence as part of their
investigation.
Earlier this week, they released CCTV images (left) of a man
they want to speak to in connection with the incidents.
Nearly a dozen names have been put forward by callers who think
they recognise the person in the photographs.
He is described as white, aged between 35 and 40 years old,
around 6ft tall and of slim build.
He was wearing dark clothing, including a dark baseball cap,
sunglasses and dark gloves.
He was also wearing cycling trousers and shoes and was carrying
a blue and black rucksack.
