A NEW media guru is being sought by Kent Police in an attempt to bring officers closer to the public and reduce the fear of crime.

The force has made it clear it is not looking for a figure similar to Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's former press secretary. An advertisement for the position stresses "no spin".

Kent's new chief constable Mike Fuller is keen to overhaul the force's approach to communications which has been criticised in the past as being somewhat aloof.

Under his plans, police officers will be given a much greater role in putting across the force's side of the story on the fight against crime in the county.

The new head of corporate communications, who will receive a salary of between £50,000 and £70,000, will be responsible for briefing officers on the best way to get that message across.

The new media chief will not be a frontline spokesperson for the force, instead working behind the scenes briefing senior officers and offering guidance and advice.

The search has begun with an advertisement placed in the national press which asks for a "straight talker" with the ability to deliver clear and simple messages that change opinions.

The deadline for applications is February 9 although the successful candidate is not expected to be in post for at least three months.
