MORE than 1,700 people across the borough of Bromley who pay towards their care could face financial hardship and others could be denied any home support at all if proposals to increase charges above inflation get the go-ahead.
They currently pay £9.27 an hour for help with personal care, housework, cleaning, cooking and shopping. But with a four-year financial forecast predicting a £4.4million deficit for social services, it could rise to £14.19 – an increase of 50 per cent more than inflation.
Bromley council says the cost-cutting measures, which would save £608,000 a year if a phasing plan were introduced in April, would help recover more of the £16 an hour it costs to provide the service.
It also suggests removing the maximum charge for home care, which is currently £330 a week.
In addition, proposals to change eligibility criteria would mean new applicants with moderate needs would be turned away.
Although those being cared for would not be denied the service, newcomers would be advised of alternative support.
Plans are also in hand to increase the community alarm service from £5.87 a week to £6.64. People who need two carers for tasks such as lifting are currently only charged for one. This could change so costs are doubled or increased by 50 per cent.
The plans were unveiled by cabinet member for adult and community services, Cllr Graham Arthur, at a portfolio meeting.
He said: “We are going to have a grown up debate about this. It may mean certain people currently in receipt of some services will not be able to have that service.
“We need to be clear that we will still provide a service at a cost that people can afford. We have a duty of care that we recognise. We also have a duty to balance the budget.”
A consultation period, when letters will be sent out to those affected, lasts until February 28. A decision will be announced on March 7.
Anyone worried about the proposed changes should call a special helpline on 0208 461 7676.
