Just over a year ago, father-of-three Alan Smith was living on the streets.
He had become estranged from his family and was battling with alcohol addiction.
In September 2007 he hit rock bottom after being found unconscious outside a church. But instead of giving up, Alan decided to get help.
Now, the 40-year-old from Gillingham has given up drinking and he has been reunited with his partner and children.
What is even more remarkable is that Alan now spends all his spare time volunteering at the Caring Hands in the Community homeless centre where, not long ago, he was the one going for help.
There, Alan is able to share his experiences with others who are in his former situation and give them advice on how they too can turn their lives around.
Day centre manager Marty Brogan has nominated Alan for a Pride in Medway Award for all the hard work he puts into helping others.
Marty said: "Alan is a big-hearted man, giving his all back to society.
"He is an inspiration.
"There are other people like Alan who overcome their problems but it takes a special person to stay on at the centre and help other people."
Alan married his long-term partner Sandra this year and the couple are expecting their fourth child any day now.
He said: "The past 11 months have been the best of my life.
"Without the help of Caring Hands, I wouldn't be here today. They helped me find accommodation and helped me get back on my feet.
"I volunteer at the centre every spare hour I have."
