A shopkeeper has impressed two local councillors with his dedication to his community.
It led to Barry Cutler, who runs Barry's News in Delce Road, Rochester, being put forward for a Pride in Medway award to recognise his efforts.
The store, originally called Cutler's, was opened by Barry's father in 1942. Barry began working behind the counter when he was just 16 - and almost 50 years later he still loves his job.
He said: "I began working here in 1959. I took up an apprenticeship when I left school but after six months my dad persuaded me to give that up and go into business with him And I have worked here ever since."
"I think it's meeting and dealing with the public which has kept me working here. The job is different every day.
"Sometimes you can be having a rotten day and someone will come in and cheer you up."
Barry was nominated for an award in the community involvement category by Rochester East ward councillors Nick Bowler and Teresa Murray.
Cllr Murray said: "We chose to nominate Barry because he provides such a good service to the community.
"The shop is run in a traditional way and the personal service he gives is very valued in the area. We feel it makes a difference having a local shop, where the owner cares about local people."
Barry added: "It is a bit of a surprise but I'm pleased someone has recognised I have been here for almost 50 years and nominated me for an award. It's a bit like a Medway version of being named on the Queen's Birthday Honours List."
