When Debbie Rumble was diagnosed with throat cancer she was forced to take time off from her much-loved job as a youth worker for Medway Council.
Her illness meant she was unable to talk for long periods but it didn't stop her from keeping in constant contact with her colleagues.
Instead of picking up the phone for a chat the 50-year old sent text messages to her fellow work friends offering them advice and support as they went out on the streets at night looking for youngsters hanging around with nothing to do.
As a result, her colleague Kathryn Bridges decided to nominate Debbie for the courage category for this year's Pride in Medway awards.
Mrs Bridges said: "Debbie is a youth worker and a wonderful friend who cares about people.
"She has been very ill but I've not heard her moan once.
"Debbie underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy and lost all her hair as a result of the treatment.
"Fortunately she has now been given the all clear and has returned to work on a part-time basis."
Debbie of Watson Avenue, Chatham, said: "I didn't know I had been nominated so it came as a complete surprise.
"I've been doing my job for just under two years and I really enjoy it. I love working with young people and when you get them engaged in something it gives you a real buzz so I really missed my work when I was ill."
