A 37-year-old prisoner has been found hanged in his cell at Swaleside prison on the Isle of Sheppey.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate Kevin Pugh, but he was pronounced dead by prison medical staff.

Pugh was serving a life term after being convicted of grievous bodily harm in 2000. He came from the Lancashire area.

A prison office spokesman said: "All deaths in custody are a tragedy, and our sympathies are with Mr Pugh's family."

The death occurred on Monday. An investigation will be carried out by the prisons and probation ombudsman.
