An investigation has been launched after a fire started in the stairwell of a converted house.

Firefighters from Strood and Medway were called to Foord Street, Rochester, shortly before 7pm last night.

Initial reports indicated that a person may have been trapped inside the building in one of two flats. A search was carried out but it was found to be empty.

Crews left the scene just after 10pm.

Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue Service are working together to try and establish the cause of the fire.
