Protest at soccer club's development plan

EXTRA traffic chaos would be the result if the proposed upgrading of Margate Football Club's Hartsdown Road ground went ahead, say protestors.

Audrey Creed, of Westbrook, has collected nearly 200 signatures for a petition against the planned upgrade, which includes a 6,000-seater stadium, hotel with conference facilities, social club, casino, bingo hall, and lesiure and fitness centre.

The petition is asking the police and Thanet council to conduct urgent speed and traffic surveys in All Saints Avenue, Tivoli Park Avenue, and Hartsdown Road.

Audrey Creed said residents were already concerned about the volume and speed of existing traffic, and that the development would only add to it.

Other objections from residents include the loss of many mature trees and wildlife; part of a pitch and putt course and children's play areas.

A Thanet council spokesman said: “The proposal will be considered by the planning committee following the usual procedures, and residents’ objections will be taken into account.”
