THE landlords of one of the first pubs in Kent to introduce a complete smoking ban say it has been well received by the vast majority of customers.
The historic Cock Horse, at Detling, near Maidstone, became a smoke-free zone on April 2 when it re-opened after a major refit.
The pub, which dates back to the 15th century, is the ninth pub owned by the Laurel Pub Company to introduce a total non-smoking policy.
Pub manager Colin Howarth said: "The response so far from the majority of people has been very positive. We've had very few negative comments. Most people seem all for it."
Laurel says its eight other no-smoking pubs have all seen trade increase and is planning to make 60 other pubs in its 625 chain smoke-free by the end of the summer.
The smoking ban has delighted Mr Howarth and his wife Jackie who have managed the pub for the past 12 years.
He said: "As non-smokers we're both right behind this and our staff are all backing it too. The smoking ban certainly brought some new people in."
Signs around the pub warn customers it is now a smoke-free zone and smokers are invited to use the patio and garden if they want to light up.
