Residents in Bexleyheath have vented their anger at plans by supermarket giant Tesco to build a store on their doorsteps.

Concerned members of the public have been contacting the Extra all week since Tesco unveiled its plan to transform the current pagoda-style Woolwich building in Erith Road into a supermarket and housing development.

Bexleyheath already has four other supermarkets including Sainsbury's and Asda.

Tesco has teamed up St James's Investments to announce its proposal for the site and have arranged local workshops for the public to air their views.

But more than 50 attended a recent protest outside the site to complain about the plan.

June Uttridge, 77, has been going door to door to get signatures on a petition opposing the scheme.

She said: "We don't need a Tesco and we don't want it.

"I have lived in this road all my life and we just don't want it."

Tesco says any new store would sell food and non-food items.

Corporate Affairs Manager, James Wiggam, said he would listen to residents. He said: "We are keen to engage with the community at an early stage so that they can help inform out proposals.

"We believe a new retail store is needed in Bexleyheath as an anchor to attract shoppers back to the area."
