Thousands of parents are expected to keep their children home from school today to protest over controversial new SATS exams.

Six and seven-year-olds across England are due to take part in the first-ever pupil "strike".

It is being organised by campaigners who say the tests put too much pressure on youngsters.

SAT exams test children's abilities in English, maths and science and are held at the end of infant school, primary school and Year 9.

But critics say the focus on testing leaves children "over-tested, over-worked and in a school system that places more importance on test results and league tables than children's happiness and joy of learning".

They are urging parents taking part in the protest to take their children on an educational trip instead.

The government says the exams are necessary to prepare children for the future.
