Ramsgate library has risen from the ashes, five years after a huge fire gutted the impressive building.
The 100-year old landmark on Guildford Lawn has been brought into the 21st Century, with bright carpets and sofas, hi-tech computer facilities and hundreds of new books.
The historic façade is the only throw back to the past, although the two-tier building follows the outline of its predecessor.
Local people are already using the revamped library, which is officially opened by special guests including Ramsgate’s Golden Globe-winning actress Brenda Blethyn on Friday(February 20).
Jackie Taylor-Smith, district manager for Thanet libraries, said: “It’s very much a library and the focus is still on the books and on reader development.
“But it’s now more than that because our customers want other facilities. We have a huge range of information, so people can come along and do job searches or we can point them in the right direction for other services.
“The reaction so far has been brilliant. We’ve had some wonderful comments with people saying how light and modern it is inside.”
An open-plan ground floor is divided into various sections, including a zone specially designed for teenagers and another for children to enjoy story time with mums, dads and grandparents.
Young people also inspired the creation of a striking stained glass window that takes centre stage at the front of the building. The window was designed by architect John Corley and students from six local schools submitted colourful designs.
Ms Taylor-Smith added: “The Friends of Ramsgate Library have been so helpful and extremely active in raising funds for the stained glass window.
“The childrens’ work is fantastic and it sets off this magnificent new building.”
The new library is open from 9am until 6pm Monday to Friday and from 9am until 5pm on Saturday.
A special programme of events including dinosaur digs, African drumming and a visit from Bookstart Bear are being held next week to mark the official re-opening.
