Regarded as the alternative Cowes, the new-look Ramsgate Week 2008 promises to be a spectacular regatta at the resort’s famous Royal Harbour – the only one with royal status in the UK - from August 11 – 16.
Organised by the Royal Temple Yacht Club, it is the third largest international regatta in the UK, featuring about 100 boats from Great Britain and the Continent. Trophy races are held each day and include the historic Gold Cup and Round the Goodwin’s races.
Commenting on the new format, Commodore Davena Green said: “We believe we have created a very special, highly flexible programme that will accommodate people who want to take a full week’s holiday as well as those who can only spare a couple of days.
“The format has been amended to provide a gap between the end of Cowes Week and the start of Ramsgate Week. We are also featuring a UK IRC East Coast Championship as a series running from Thursday to Saturday requiring only two days away from the office. We look forward to welcoming regular and new competitors to one of the friendliest and least expensive regattas in a popular holiday resort.”
All types of yachts are encouraged to enter as races are tailored to suit the various classes - and you don’t have to be a top racer to take part. For the fifth year running there is racing for cruising classes with both spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes. Competitors in these classes enjoy a more relaxed week with entertainment on and off the water.
Ramsgate benefits from excellent sailing conditions with numerous racing buoys set out in constant depth in unprotected but sheltered water. The start line is just minutes away from the harbour entrance.
Ramsgate Week spectators can take advantage of the cafes, restaurants and pubs around the harbour and lively entertainment throughout the event in the harbour-side tented village. The main marquee bar is open daily until 1am.
