COUNCIL tax could increase by 1.5 per cent over the next three years if Bromley council fails to get a grip on the amount of waste being tipped into landfill sites every day.
With landfill tax currently set at £24 per tonne, the annual expenditure for Bromley’s estimated 69,000 tonnes of landfill rubbish equates to around £1.5 million.
However the Government is set to increase landfill taxes by £8 a year, meaning that by 2010 the council could be forking out well over £3 million to dump the borough’s rubbish.
Figures for August this year reveal that Bromley council sent more than 5,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste to landfill sites in Surrey and Essex, at a cost of almost £125,000.
By the turn of the decade this cost could double.

A spokesman for Bromley Council said: “If you do the maths then in three years we could be paying a quarter of a million pounds per month in landfill tax, which is a lot of cash.
