A YOUNG farm worker has been found dead in a field in Kent. Police have confirmed that the man had suffered serious head injuries.
A walker discovered the body of the 24-year-old Latvian in a field close to the centre of Yalding, near Maidstone.
Detectives say a post mortem examination has revealed he suffered injuries to his skull. However, it is still unclear exactly how he was injured and why his body was found in a field.
Contact had been made with the Russian Embassy in an attempt to bring the man’s relatives to Britain to identify him.
Rick Watkins, the coroner’s officer for Mid Kent and Medway, said: "We think we know who he is and we are trying to facilitate getting the relatives over here, but until we have had them look at the body we can’t even say for sure who this man is."
Two men, one in his 20s and another in his 40s, were arrested soon after the body was found. They have since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
Kent Police are keeping an open mind about the incident. They have referred their preliminary findings to the Health and Safety Executive and are waiting for the outcome of a joint investigation before deciding whether to take further action.
The dead man was among a number of casual labourers employed at Court Lodge Farm, Yalding, farmed by Doug Worley. The body was discovered on Sunday at about 2.20pm.
Police cordoned off the area, between Kenward Road and the River Medway, while scene of crime officers looked for forensic evidence.
