HUNDREDS of horse riders, cyclists and walkers are expected to respond to a rallying call on Saturday, September 21, to campaign for a bridge over the busy A2 at Kingston, near Canterbury.

They will be gather at 10am at Kingston village hall before making their way to the dual-carriageway to demonstrate the dangers of trying to cross.

Walkers, riders and cyclists have to negotiate four lanes of fast-moving traffic. Schoolchildren and villagers from Kingston and Barham using the Dover-bound bus service also make the hazardous crossing.

The protest is being organised by the Canterbury branch of the Ramblers Association with support from local members of the British Horse Society and cycling group Spokes.

Kath Gill, of the Ramblers Association, said: "The whole of the Barham Downs has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty and could be included on many more circular routes once a safe crossing is in place."

The campaign is being supported by county coucillor Martin Vye who said: "The Highways Agency say there is money for projects like this - so long as good justification can be made.

"I think we have a good case as it touches the right buttons - safety, rural economic development and health."
