AN 81-year-old woman pedestrian has died in hospital after being involved in a road accident.

The woman was struck by a van yesterday on the A20 at Smeeth. Kent Police said the woman was taken to hospital for treatment but later died. She has not yet been named.

The van driver involved in the tragedy was uninjured. Junction 10 of the A20 with the M20 and the Tesco roundabout was closed to allow for an investigation into the accident.

Police are appealing for witnesses. They are asked to contact PC Perez Vilas on 01233 611055 at Ashford police station. An inquest will be held.
