Villagers were stopped in a police road check - exactly a day after a woman died in a hit and run accident.

Kent police say they have a number of new lines of enquiry following this morning’s operation in Harrietsham.

Officers stopped all cars passing through the village on the A20, after the elderly woman was knocked over and killed in a hit and run accident.

The 70-year-old woman was crossing the road yesterday at a pedestrian crossing when she was hit by a car that then continued in the Ashford direction and failed to stop.

She died shortly afterwards and police are anxious to hear from any other witnesses who may have seen what happened.

Today cars travelling in both directions were held by police as they questioned all the drivers.

Sergeant Guy Ditcher said: “Bearing in mind that they’ve been stuck in traffic for a long time they have been more than helpful.”

The officers were searching particularly for two potential witnesses believed to be in the area at the time – the driver of a dark-green coloured Landrover Discovery and a woman dressed in pink, pushing a child’s buggy.

However they say a number of other witnesses have now come forward.
