A CYCLIST was taken to hospital after being attacked with a hammer by a lorry driver during a road rage incident.

Kent Police are appealing for witnesses to the assault which happened in Rainham High Street.

They say a red lorry and the bicycle collided and as a result the cyclist fell from his machine.

Witnesses described how they then saw an argument break out and the lorry driver hit the cyclist with a hammer.

The lorry driver is described by police as being male, stocky and rugged looking, with a shaved head and wearing a grey sweatshirt.

He drove off along the A2 towards Sittingbourne before police arrived.

An ambulance which happened to be near the scene took the cyclist to Gillingham's Medway Maritime Hospital. The incident occurred at around noon last Friday.

A police spokesman said: “This incident has been classified as road rage. The cyclist was taken to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be serious.”
