THE tables are being turned on the county's civic dignitaries when they swap places with the chauffeurs for an event organised by the Kent Messenger Group this afternoon.

More than 20 mayors are expected at the KM headquarters at New Hythe Lane, Larkfield, from 3.30pm after being driven there by their chauffeurs.

The role-reversal event was launched in 2001 by the KM Group president Edwin Boorman as a gesture of appreciation for the work of the mayors - and their drivers.

The idea is that the mayors take the wheel and drive their chauffeurs to the reception. In previous years some mayors have entered into the spirit of the occasion by wearing the chauffeurs uniform.

They will be met by Mr Boorman and his daughter Geraldine Allinson, who took over as chairman of the company from her father in January this year.

The drivers are then entertained to a three-course meal with drinks while the mayors have an alcohol-free afternoon tea.

Mr Boorman launched the event after his year as High Sheriff (1997 - 1998) when he met many mayors and their chauffeurs and came to appreciate the work they did for their councils and the county.
